Kinetic Sand is so much fun, even as an adult. This sandbox is one of the better ideas I've used as a parent.

Little kids LOVE it. This sandbox especially awesome on days when you can't get outside because it's -45 degrees Celsius, or pouring rain. It nurtures their investigative explorer side, helps build developing hand muscles, and hand-eye coordination. I love that it just stows away when were done playing.

Bonus points if you do a treasure hunt bury objects for them to find!

I don't recommend going with the knock-off kits for this project because the sand texture is not the same, and they don't come with enough sand to fill the bottom of the container. So you'll end up spending more money buying extra sand, anyways.

What you'll need:

  • 6 lbs or 3 bags of Kinetic Sand

  • A Variety Small Beach Toys (dollar store trip, YAY!)

  • A few spoons you don't mind sacrificing to the toddler Gods

  • A tote, long enough to sport multiple small humans around it, short enough for tiny arms to easily reach objects inside

Fun learning ideas for this project:

  1. Ages 3+ Do a treasure hunt! Hide coins under the toys and in the sand and use the opportunity to start talking about money, what it is, how it's used, and what each coin is worth.

  2. Ages 3- Talk about shapes and colors. Talk about stuff under the sea. Letting littlles squish things between their fingers helps fine motor development.

  3. Other fun stuff- you can do themed sensory bins too!

Happy playing!

Go hug your babies.
